Bitten by a Cobra

The trip to South Kackalakee wasn't all bad.

Turns out the guy that works for me down there is an avid hunter, and a gunnie, and he drives around in this...

He must have thought it was strange that I kept calling him Larry.

Welcome to South Carolina.

These are pine trees.

This is Sand.

Let me do that one more time for those of you that weren't paying attention. Watch closely now...

Tuesday Bluesday

In my opinion, the finest tune Steely Dan produced...

------------------------------------------------------

The Rusty Nail
I bought some Drambuie a couple weeks ago and tried this one out.
Mix equal parts Drambuie and single malt scotch (I used Glenlivet) and serve over ice in a tumbler.

SIP IT. Take your time. This one sneaks up on you.

--------------------------------------------------------
Mostly on the road this week, so expect some road pics.

Here's one to get you started.

Yuengling Lager draught at the Thai place for dinner last night.

My co-worker and I stumbled across the place by accident. By the time we got to the hotel and showered, we were looking for a quick stop at a sub joint or something. (My work day yesterday had me seriously considering that truck driving school again.)

Man, we hit the jackpot.

The place is called Tommy Thai.
Just outside the beltway, if you take the Old Keen Mill Rd exit west from 95, and then turn right at the very first light, there will be a strip mall on your left. This place is tucked away back in the far right corner of the strip mall.
About $20-$30 per person, depending on whether or not you get the appetizer and/or a couple beers.
I got the Spicy Thai Wrap appetizer, Seafood Drunken Noodles entree, and two draught Yuenglings, and walked out $30 lighter, after the tip.

It was worth every damn cent. I haven't had Thai food that good in years.

(Fuck it. I don't think a truck driving job would have the expense account I have now. I'll stick with what I've got.)

THIS...IS...SPARTAAAAA!!!!!

video
Warning: Crappy cell phone video.

Little fucker called on Sunday, and he's out hunting again!

(Yeah...that's A1C B practicing his bow shooting in the house. Chip off the old block, that kid.)

------------------------------------------
A Professor was giving a lecture on "Involuntary Muscular Contractions" to his first year medical students.

Realizing that this was not the most riveting subject, the Professor decided to lighten the mood slightly.
He pointed to a young woman in the front row and said,

"Do you know what your ass hole is doing while you're having an orgasm???"

She replied, "Probably deer hunting with his buddies."

Sending some linky love out to Leigh Van Etten. She doesn't blog just because she's an attention-whore like me. She is a veteran herself. I worked with her and her husband Wayne on the flightline many, many....many years ago in Okinawa.

Her blog, A Misfit's Mother's Journey, is where she talks about dealing with the terrible injuries her Marine son received from an IED in Afghanistan.
Please drop by and offer her some support.

I don't tell many people this, but A1C B signed up for the Marine Corps first, during is senior year in high school.
While he was on DEP, he went out playing scrub football with his buddies and blew out his knee. Badly
The Corps dropped him like a bad habit.
A couple years later (after repairs and PT) he signed up for the Air Force.

I read Leigh's blog and imagine if things had gone differently for my family. Would that be my son in that chair?

Sunday morning sleep-in #27

I've been taking advice from Brigid and toting a camera around with me.

"Dawn Redwood" Metasequoia glyptostroboides
My BIL planted one in his front yard. The Genus was thought to be completely extinct, until a grove of about 5,000 was found in remote China. Since then, people have been planting them all over the place. The tree is still listed as "critically endangered".

"The Harry Nice Bridge"
Crosses the Potomac river south of  Washington D.C.
The barge is going to be loaded with gypsum, bound for NY.

"Height of Technology"
We have a million dollars of the latest high-tech equipment filling this tank with the purest water you can imagine. If you look close, you can see a string tied to that metal marker on the rail. The string goes up over the top of the tank and down through a hole to a cork float.
Voila! Level gauge.

-------------------------------------------------------
Yeah. Not feeling very bloggy this weekend.

I'm having a lot more fun hanging out with Mrs and Miss B, putting together movie marathons. Yesterday was Jason Bourne. We got through two and a half before I fell asleep on the couch.

I dreamed that I found a small device implanted in my hip. When I dug it out with a pocketknife, I turned it on and it projected some writing on the wall.
I was expecting a numbered Swiss bank account, turns out it said "It is a violation of Federal Law to remove this tag."

Was that an Obama dream?

Saturday Morning Coffee #41

A1C B's first deer.

I got all the details wrong about it when I mentioned it a couple days ago. I said he was bow hunting in South Dakota, but it was a rifle in North Dakota. He had his bow along, but didn't have a shot with it.

First things first, they set up camp at Froelich Dam. (Ladies, check out those guns. He's single, you know...)

Then they took time to "scope out" their blind.

Then it was time to settle down to a nice dinner of beans and vegetable beef soup on the gas burner. (Two guys sharing a tent after a dinner consisting mostly of beans? No way. BTDT. I'm surprised there were any deer within 5 miles of their camp.)

The crack of dawn rolled around, and Joel filled his tag on the very first day of the trip. Jeez! A North Dakota doe is the size of a Virginia 6-point buck!

It's Miller time!

Black Friday

-----------------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------

I had plans to head over to Northern Virginia Gun Club for the Black Friday IDPA competition, where David will be participating.
I ended up sleeping in until almost 9am, and woke up with a head cold? Ugh. Hope I didn't pick something up from someone over at the BIL's house yesterday. Maybe it's just self-loathing from the disgusting amounts of food I stuffed into myself yesterday.
Anyway, I keeping my butt home and drinking some orange juice or something. Sorry Dave. I've got a couple days to rest up and then it's back to the ludicrous travel schedule.

Happy Thankfulness Day

Off to my BIL's house to help get the turkey in the oven.
I'm gonna pester Andy, see if he wants to go have a cup of coffee or something since all the ranges are closed...

I'm thankful I've got a cool brother-in-law who's into shooting.

I'm thankful for that cool promotion at work that comes with my own office.

I'm thankful for the new truck that comes with the new job too.

I'm thankful that A1C B got his first deer ever just in time for Thanksgiving. He's doing things I never got a chance to do at that age.

I'm thankful Miss B keeps pulling down straight A's in college. She's also doing things I never got a chance to do at that age.

I'm thankful that Mrs B is so understanding when it comes to all the travel and long hours that come with that great promotion.

I'm thankful for all my blog buddies.

I'm thankful I'm still vertical.

For A1C B.  Congratulations, son.

Road Pics #1

Found out in the west end of Maryland, not far from the West Virginia border.

Glass power line insulators.

It was an old (very old) run of power poles that started nowhere and ran about one mile and ended nowhere. They obviously don't carry electricity anymore. From the sheer number of insulators on each pole I'd say they were probably telephone or telegraph wires. I've been driving this road pretty regularly for the past couple months, but the old poles didn't appear until the trees and vines began to lose their leaves. In the spring, they'll disappear again.

When I got home last night, I started a little research, trying to find out the last time anyone used glass insulators.

I found a whole subculture of people who collect these things. Go check out this website HERE. Especially their photo gallery.

I thought I could run it down and get an idea when these poles were put up. I gave up after an hour or so. I had no idea...

Seriously...these people have forums and everything. They discuss all the different types of glass insulators, who made them and when, and where they were used and what for. (Such as power lines, electric fences, telegraph lines...the list goes on forever.)

All I had to do was substitute the word "gun" every time I read "insulator" and it sounded like an evening with Tamara Keel.

Mind:  Blown

Monday Grglrbrglhmmph

Man, I gotta get my ass on the road by six.

We had some abso-fucking-lutely awesome seats at the Redskins game. Ten rows up from the field. We went with Jason and his smokin' hot wife.

Awesome seats.

Jason
(All the neighbors loved him. He kept giving away little shooter bottles of Jim Beam.)

Jason's smokin' hot wife.
(Hint: She's not wearing a top hat.)

We won the game 31-6 over the Eagles, so we were singing this tune a lot.

video

The girls had some very nice dance routines, and their outfits were perfect.

They did the cutest little dance number to "Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy", and they were wearing little military uniform outfits. It was an inspiring tribute to our troops.
I felt swelled up with pride. (Swelled up with something, anyway.)

video

Oh yeah, and some guys went out on the field and threw a ball around. That was cool too.

Sunday Gameday

I thought that since the election stuff was well and truly over, I could start watching the news again.

(For Dan) Colorado and Washington State voters chose to legalize "recreational" marijuana...

The usual suspects start "accidentally" dropping rockets into Israel...

--------------------------------------------------------
Well...that's enough of that.

Time for me to go have some real fun.

Going to freeze my ass off sitting outdoors drinking $9 beers.

Saturday Morning Coffee #40

-----------------------------------------------
Got you! You bastard!
You thought you were so slick, making symptoms show up in a different part of the system.
You had me chasing my tail for a while there, but it's all over now.

Now I'm gonna hang you on my wall like a fucking trophy.

-----------------------------------------

-----------------------------------------------
In case no one noticed, I'm feeling pretty damn good about myself this morning.

Hat Tip to Talk Straight for the inspirational pictures and videos. He's got a great conservative Tumblr blog too.

Friday Funnies

Woot!

Going to pick up my new (to me) truck today.

----------------------------------------
My last weekend before I go "gypsy".
